Michael Richard Pompeo's background bears little resemblance to that of recent secretaries of state, all of whom had long careers in public life and extensive international experience.
Pompeo is a former United States Army officer. He was a also US representative from Kansas for six years and director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for just over a year.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Pompeo supported Marco Rubio. Although he was concerned that 45 would be an authoritarian president who ignored the constitution, he reluctantly supported 45 after Rubio dropped out of the race.
