In 2020, when the world stopped, everyday objects became the focus of my work. I was far from home, so to connect with Facebook friends, I asked them to name something red or yellow. They answered with beets, cherries, strawberries, corn, bee balm, and lemon slices. To reflect my connection with others, I used the trash I generated from everyday living as my medium, transforming ordinary debris into beautiful works. Waste is connected to all of us, especially the debris on beaches across islands everywhere. Trash on the shores of Bonaire, my winter home, comes from Europe and Africa. Garbage on the windward side of Tahiti comes from North, Central, and South America. Behind the beauty is the reality of what we do to ourselves and our environment. This work also highlights the amount of plastic used in food packaging.
