Gina Cheri Haspel is the first woman to hold the post of CIA director permanently. Her career with the CIA started in 1985 as a reports officer. Before becoming CIA director, she was appointed deputy director of the Agency — a position that does not require Senate confirmation.
Her appointment was controversial because of her involvement in the Rendition, Detention, and Interrogation Program: while she was chief of a CIA black site in Thailand in 2002, CIA employees used waterboarding and other "enhanced interrogation techniques" on prisoners.
