After Michael Flynn resigned from his position as national security advisor, McFarland thought that she could keep her job. Instead, the president nominated her to be the American ambassador to Singapore. The Senate sent her nomination back to the White House after Democrats said she misled lawmakers about her knowledge of Flynn's contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Later, she withdrew her name from consideration.
